Small changes in PEF may be first sign of developing occupational asthma
The interpretation of small changes in PEF related to work exposure has been helped in this paper of occupational asthma in teachers, where small changes were sometimes the first sign of developing occupational asthma, followed by more usual bigger changes with continuing exposure (in this case to acrylates). They were also seen as exposures decreased over time before becoming negative when exposure ceased. Other studies have shown small changes in severe occupational asthma with continuing exposure, sometimes taking many weeks to improve away from exposure. Re-exposure may then result in very large falls in PEF.
