Can hairdressers get severe aasthma from their work?

I have a hairdresser friend who had a severe asthma attack while hairdressing, could this be due to exposures in the salon?

Hairdressers, at least those dying and bleaching hair, are one of the long established and fairly common causes of occupational asthma. A recent study of all occupational asthma in France showed that this was one of the few causes of occupational asthma not becoming less frequent. Persulphates in bleaches are the commonest cause.
