Oasys plots identify occupational hypersensitivity pneumonitis as well as occupational asthma |
|
Restictive lung diseases such as hypersensitivity pneumonitis reduce FEV1 and FVC in similar proportions. Although PEF is unable to differentiate between obstructive and restrictive lung diseases, the magnitude of reduction in PEF appears similar to those with occupational asthma, showing that Oasys plots are able to identify occupational exposures as the cause of hypersensitivity pneumonitis as well as asthma. The paper describes changes in PEF in workers from the same factory with sensitisation to contaminated metal-working fluids, some of whom had hypersensitivity pneumonitis and some occupational asthma. Those with hypersensitivity pneumonitis had late reactions, those with occupational asthma had a mixture of respones, with most being immediate or flat.
