Chrome causes occupational asthma in machinists of nimonic alloys |
|
Occupational asthma from aerosols of metal-working fluid are fairly common, usually due to microbial contamination of the fluid. This paper describes sensitisation to chrome dissolved in the metal-working fluid in machinists of nimonic (high chrome and cobalt) steels, with positive specific inhalation tests to potassium dichromate. Cobalt dissolved in metal-working fluid has been documented before, this is the first report of chrome sensitisation from machining.
