A positive challenge to MDF at last |
|
MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard) is made from ground wood compressed usually with a resin made from urea formaldehyde. Many different woods are used, including rubber trees. Much attention has been given to possible formaldehyde emissions, altough formaldehyde is a recognised cause of occupational asthma, no cases of MDF asthma has been shown to be due to formaldehyde. The woods are the most likely cause of the occupational asthma, working with MDF is more dusty than most native woods, which might account for at least some of the upper airway symptoms. Specific inhalation testing has shown that MDF dust (rather than formaldehyde) was the cause of occupational asthma in one worker.
