Diesel fumes are a difficult topic. They contain a lot of ultrafine particles which bind other agents (and allergens) in the environment. Much of the work relates to increased asthma in the vicinity of major roads. There are descibed workers with occupational asthma for instance in bus garages, this is probably an example of irritant induced occupational asthma with latency, which is not accepted by all. There is also evidence of the irritant effects on the bronchial mucosa in normal people, I dont know of any good review of this but a number of relevant papers are attached
