Asthma can occur for the first time after an acute inhalational accident. Chlorine is the most common cause. It is usually called acute irritant or toxic asthma, in the USA it is called reactive airways dysfunction syndrome (RADS). In the UK compensation is available as an industrial accident (rather than occupational asthma as an occupational disease). You can also make a common law claim if the exposure was negligent. Recovery can be complete but long term asthma can continue.
