Is there any evidence on blood pressure and spirometry

Afternoon,
I need some advice please, at present when carrying out respiratory assessments we have always advised to check peoples blood pressure and if it is high then spirometry should not be carried out, also our previous OHP advised if someone is on medication for high blood pressure then their blood pressure should be taken prior to test
Can you point me in the direction of any research to prove this please
Many Thanks
Fiona

Hi Fiona,
The contraindication only comes if the systolic BP is >200mmHH or 100mmHg for diastolic. I don't believe there is any particular evidence fpr this (as there isn't for a lot of contraindications) it is just trying to reduce risks due to the forced nature of the manoeuvre. We don't check BP routinely on everyone but ask if they have any known high BP and if so if they are on medication and what their last reading was. If you are able to continue to check, that would be great though. The Cooper "update of contraindications" paper in Thorax is a good read for this subject.
thanks
Vicky

There is no evidence related to the dangers of spirometry in patients with hypertension
