Air purifiers & allergies

"Hello all, I wanted to ask for some advice. I am considering purchasing an air purifier but I have not found any information that shows they really work for allergies and asthma. I would love to hear from you on your own experiences, and any recommendations you can give to a newbie. I have been reading up on this topic and honestly I am extremely confused. Please help and maybe we can all learn together.

In short I dont believe that there is any consistent scientifically valid evidence of meaningful improvement in asthma with the use of an air purifier. Most filter the air and remove particulates, and require regular maintenance and change in filters, and are effective in this. Although many allergens are particulate and removed by filtration, the levels required to produce symptoms in many allergic patients is so low that the air purifiers do not control exposures sufficiently to eliminate asthma. Clearly they only work in the immediate environment of the air purifier. The air in most air-conditioned buildings passes through filters that would be regarded as air purifiers. There is no evidence for less asthma in workers in air-conditioned buildings.
